Read If: You want a glimpse at the potential Utopian future.

Do Not Read If: You are a reptilian minion, intent on using the dark side of the force to stamp out hope and love for the planet.

I’ve been hesitant to write the book review for this book. I am worried that no matter what I write, I might not convey the importance of this work to the future of humanity. In the meantime I have bought a dozen copies and have been handing them out like I was Oprah giving away television sets: “You get a book” and “Youuu get a book!”.

This post-apocalyptic fantasy is philosophical fiction in its finest, resplendent form. A riveting story that moistened my eyes, made me laugh, and kept my eyes burning into many late nights, it contains a vitally important blueprint for a potential conscious future. Set in the mid 21st century, an idyllic but internally consistent culture led by a heroine named Madrone prepares for an inevitable conflict with the greed driven imperialists that surround them.

The book mirrors Aldous Huxley’s utopian masterpiece Island, but modernizes the paradigm in an immensely entertaining story. Starhawk effortlessly weaves fantasy with reality, and covers everything from non-violent resistance, to permaculture, to non-monogamous sexual agreements. If you want to do something good for yourself and the planet, read the book and keep an eye out for the movie in the next few years to come.

  • Found out about this book through this review, and so far I love it.

Also just stumbled across the Kickstarter to help support the sequel called City of Refuge. It’s still live for another two weeks if you want to support.
